Doxycycline Hyclate Capsules are used for the treatment of a wide variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis), urinary tract infections (such as cystitis), skin and soft tissue infections (such as cellulitis, impetigo), bone and joint infections (such as osteomyelitis), sexually transmitted infections (such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, and chlamydia), ear infections (such as otitis media), and infections of the ears, nose, throat, and sinuses (such as otitis media). The capsules should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. The capsule shell should be dry and light colored so that no trace of the drug can reach the mouth or throat or any other contents of the capsule shell. Capsules of Doxycycline Hyclate are also used for the prevention of malaria in certain regions of the body, and for the treatment of cholestatic jaundice associated with patients with a history of liver disease. Doxycycline is used to treat bacterial infections. Doxycycline treats urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, respiratory infections, eye infections, sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhoea and syphilis), gum infections, diseases (like periodontitis), and others. Besides this, Doxycycline also treats acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. However, it does not treat facial redness caused by rosacea.
Doxycycline being an antibiotic prevents the growth of bacterial cells (the bad ones!) by preventing the formation of the outer protein layer of bacteria (cell wall) responsible for bacteria's growth and multiplication. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. it acts against various bacteria. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e. it stops bacteria growth but does not kill them.
Doxycycline should only be taken if advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food but should be consumed at a fixed time for the best results.
